Where it fits in your operations

Built for the work after the flame front

Air-purifying half masks are for known, non-IDLH atmospheres with enough oxygen. Within those limits, the Sundström kit covers a wide range of wildland and post-fire work.

Wildland

Mop-up and holding

Ash, dust and smoke particles while you’re cold-trailing, gridding and holding the line. The SR 336 spark arrester and SR 221 pre-filters protect the P100 from embers and coarse ash.

Post-fire

Overhaul and ash work

Particulate exposure from overhaul in exterior and burned areas, from ash handling, and during damage inspection after the fire is out. Not for interior structural firefighting.

Recovery

Debris and cleanup crews

Contractors, public works, utilities and volunteers removing ash and debris. Snap on the SR 232 where certain organic vapors or acid gases are present.

Smoke exposure

Staging, logistics and support

Drivers, dozer and engine support, and camp or incident-base staff working long shifts in smoky air, within an established respiratory protection program.

Chemical vapors

SR 232 OV/SD/CL/HC/HF

Certain levels of organic vapors, sulfur dioxide, chlorine, hydrogen chloride and hydrogen fluoride, with or without the P100. Requires a hazard assessment and a cartridge change schedule.

Community programs

HOAs, CERT and Fire Safe Councils

A standard kit for volunteers and neighborhood preparedness caches, plus a resident guide to share with homeowners.

Program compliance

A respirator is one part of a respiratory protection program

Sundström’s manual says that before occupational use, employers need a written respiratory protection program that meets OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134. In California, that’s Cal/OSHA Title 8 §5144.

01

Written program

Worksite-specific procedures, a hazard evaluation and a qualified program administrator. Voluntary users of elastomeric masks still need a medical evaluation and a cleaning and storage process.

02

Medical evaluation

Done before the employee is fit tested or required to use the respirator.

03

Fit testing

Qualitative or quantitative. Required before first use, whenever the facepiece size, style, model or make changes, and at least once a year.

04

Training

Comprehensive and understandable, and repeated every year. Covers limits, putting on, seal checks, maintenance and change-out.

Facial hair

Under 1910.134(g), tight-fitting respirators can’t be worn by anyone with facial hair between the seal and the face, or facial hair that interferes with the valves.

Cal/OSHA wildfire smoke (§5141.1)

Covers outdoor workers in California when the current PM2.5 AQI is 151 or higher. From 151 to 500, employers must provide respirators for voluntary use. Above 500, respirator use is required under §5144. Firefighters engaged in wildland firefighting are exempt, but contractors, utilities and support crews often are not.

Wildland standards

NFPA 1984 covers respirators for wildland firefighting and WUI operations. This kit is sold as a NIOSH-approved air-purifying respirator. Check your agency’s specification before adopting it as line PPE.

Use limitations

Know what an APR is not

  • Not for atmospheres with less than 19.5% oxygen, or for IDLH conditions
  • Not for structural firefighting, and not a substitute for SCBA
  • Not for unknown contaminants, or substances with poor warning properties
  • Particulate filters don’t stop gases or vapors, and no element in this kit is approved for carbon monoxide
  • No eye protection. Add goggles where smoke or contaminants irritate the eyes
  • Not approved for abrasive blasting
  • Never substitute, modify or mix parts outside the NIOSH-approved configuration

Sizing for crews

Size the crew in minutes

SizeChin to nose bridgePart no.
S/MUnder 112 mm (4.4 in)H05-6121S
M/L112–125 mm (4.4–4.9 in)H05-6121M
L/XLOver 125 mm (4.9 in)H05-6121L

Sundström size guide. The measurement is a starting point. The fit test decides.

  • Measure each member’s chin to nose bridge, then confirm with your fit test
  • Fit-test each person on the exact size and model they’ll be issued. A size change means a new fit test
  • Label each mask with its SR 368 ID tag, and keep one mask per person
  • Tell us your expected size mix when you request a quote, and we’ll help you plan stock

Field seal check

Seal check every time the mask goes on

01

Assemble

Snap the SR 510 onto the SR 232 (the filter snaps onto the cartridge, never the other way round). Add a pre-filter and holder, then the SR 336 disc. Seat the stack with the arrows toward the face.

02

Don

Remove your helmet, glasses and hearing protection. Hang the mask from your neck, raise it to your face, pull the crown pad over your head and tighten the strap.

03

Negative-pressure check

Lightly cover the hole in the pre-filter holder. Breathe in gently and hold your breath. The mask should pull in and stay in.

04

Correct or swap

If there’s a leak, adjust the strap, check the valves or switch sizes. Repeat until it passes, and only then enter the work area.

Filter logistics and care

Keep crews supplied through the season

Change-out rules

  • Pre-filter first: when breathing resistance rises, replace the SR 221
  • P100: replace when resistance stays high after a new pre-filter, or when it is damaged
  • SR 232: follow a change schedule set by a competent person, or replace at once if the wearer smells or tastes the contaminant
  • Dispose of used elements according to local waste rules

Stocking plan

  • One kit per member, plus spares in each size
  • SR 510 5-packs ($62.95) for engines and cache boxes
  • Spare SR 232 cartridges ($19.99) where vapor exposure is expected
  • Rotate stock by the date on the label. Unopened, SR 510s last 10 years and SR 232s last 5

Cleaning and storage

  • SR 5226 wipes for daily care
  • For deep cleaning, remove the elements, valves and harness. Wash at 104 °F or below with mild soap and a soft brush, then sanitize (for example 50 ppm chlorine for 2 minutes). Rinse and air-dry
  • Never use solvents
  • Store in the kit box: clean, cool, dry and out of the sun

FAQ

Questions from safety officers and crew leads

Can these be used for structural firefighting?

No. Sundström’s manual states that air-purifying respirators must not be used for structural firefighting. Use SCBA for interior attack and any IDLH atmosphere.

Do we need to fit test if crews only use the masks voluntarily?

For elastomeric half masks, OSHA 1910.134(c)(2)(ii) still requires a medical evaluation and a cleaning and storage process for voluntary users. Fit testing is required whenever respirator use is required. Check with your program administrator.

Which NIOSH approval number applies?

It depends on the configuration: SR 100 with the SR 510 alone, or with the SR 510 and SR 232. The approval number is printed on the NIOSH label in the kit’s user manual. Ask us for a copy when you request a quote.

Is the kit NFPA 1984 certified?

We sell it as a NIOSH-approved air-purifying respirator, and we don’t claim NFPA 1984 certification. If your agency specifies NFPA 1984, check that requirement before you buy.

How often do filters need replacing on the line?

It depends on the dust and smoke load. Change the pre-filter first when breathing resistance rises, then the P100 if needed. Change the SR 232 on your change schedule. Stock spare P100s and pre-filters on every apparatus.

Can the SR 510 be used on other Sundström masks?

Yes. Sundström lists the SR 510 for the SR 100 and SR 900 half masks, the SR 200 full-face mask and the SR 500 PAPR (which takes two filters).

Do you offer volume pricing?

Contact us about volume pricing. Send us your quantities and size mix through the contact page, call 424-388-0493 or email JonGustafson@FastFireNetwork.com.

What’s the warranty?

Sundström’s US manual gives one year against defects in materials and workmanship from the date of purchase.
